The automatic update of WordPress has failed. Please try updating again.” This page explains what kind of security concerns there are and how to deal with them.

WordPress What is WordPress auto-update?

WordPress auto-update is a feature that is enabled from the beginning if not specifically configured, and automatically applies patches (programs that plug vulnerabilities) when vulnerabilities are found in the WordPress program itself.

Only minor versions (*) are updated, and since it is only a security patch, it is unlikely to adversely affect the functionality of the site or cause bugs.

(* Only the last digit of the version is updated, such as 6.0.1 → 6.0.2, etc.)

What happens in terms of security if automatic updates fail in WordPress?

If the automatic update is not applied, it means that the site has not been updated to close any known vulnerabilities.

Most vulnerabilities are minor, such as cross-site scripting, which does not involve tampering with the site and, if left unchecked, could at worst allow the site to be used as an intermediary for some kind of unauthorized link, but in rare cases, a larger vulnerability may be found that allows the server to be compromised or administrator privileges to be taken away, allowing the site to be tampered with. However, in rare cases, a larger vulnerability may be found that allows the server to be hacked or the administrator’s rights to the site to be taken away and tampered with, so a minor version upgrade should be performed.

1 Server capacity limitation

You are unable to download the update file due to the capacity limitation of your server. Deleting backup files or otherwise increasing the free space on your server will solve the problem.

2 Write permissions on files and folders

Some or all of the files or folders in WordPress are set as non-writable and cannot be adapted for updates.

In this case, you may be able to solve the problem by connecting to the server with FTP software and changing all WordPress files to have write permissions that allow (755) the owner to write to them.

3 Certificate Failure

If the certificate included in WordPress is out of date and cannot be used, the server distributing the update file may reject it.

Please refer to the following for the cause of this problem and how to deal with it.
